VINYL ROOFING IS THE SUSTAINABLE CHOICE
Learn how the longevity of vinyl roofing membranes –
combined with their relatively low use of non-renewable
resources, energy savings characteristics and recyclability
– make them the sustainable choice among commercial
roofing systems.
Roofs made of vinyl contribute significantly to achieving two major objectives of green building programs – the reduction of both building cooling loads and the urban heat island effect. That is why the reflectance, emittance and/or solar reflectance index criteria for LEED, ENERGY STAR, Green Globes and California’s Title 24 can all be met through the use of a reflective vinyl roof. Many sustainable construction guidance documents and standards recommend cool roofs.
All products have environmental impacts resulting from manufacturing and shipping. Vinyl’s long life cycle – and the associated lower energy consumption to both produce the raw material and process it into useful products – makes it as sustainable a building product as any other. Furthermore, the feedstock of vinyl resin comprises the least amount (typically less than half) of non-renewable raw materials of any roofing alternative. Most alternatives have far more embedded energy than vinyl. And vinyl is the only commercial roofing material that is being recycled at the end of its service life.
The Facts on PVC and the Environment
This presentation developed by the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association provides a detailed environmental overview of both the material vinyl and vinyl membrane roofing. Specific subjects covered include energy efficiency, air quality, low maintenance and longevity, recycling options and solvent-free PVC membrane roofing application techniques.
Tested, Trusted Every Day Environmental Profile: Vinyl Roofing Membranes
This brochure, a joint publication of The Vinyl Institute and the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association, presents the most recent and reliable scientific data, complete with references, in response to questions about the health and safety of PVC membrane roofing.
